Oakland Tribune: Seeking a happy ending to Cal career

Framed by perception, Gray hopes senior football season creates positive memories

By Dave Newhouse, STAFF WRITER

BERKELEY — Perception isn't always reality. David Gray's football time at Cal has been as much about image as performance. He has been linked more with trouble than touchdowns. And that seems odd because his college career began with a touchdown on his very first play, catching a 71-yard pass against Baylor that launched the Jeff Tedford era at Cal. That was 2002, and there have been just two touchdowns since for Gray, who has received more attention for two off-campus incidents than personal highlights at Memorial Stadium.
