Daily Cal: It May Be Deja Vu All Over Again

Eight months ago, it would have been seen as an unimaginable nightmare.  Anyone who knows anything in Berkeley would have cringed to hear that Joe Ayoob-after playing three flies up with the USC defense last year and losing his starting quarterback gig to a converted fullback-might lead the No. 9 Cal football team into Knoxville.  But alas, the times they are a-changin'.

Flash forward to Saturday's media day. Ayoob was all smiles, welcoming throngs of fans eager to whisper words of encouragement for a guy who looked invincible in junior college but horrendous in D-I ball.  The reality is that with Nate Longshore's nagging back injury, which sidelined the presumed starter for a few days last week, Ayoob is looking more like the starter every day-even though Longshore began camp number one on the depth chart.
