Seattle Times: Proven quarterback a Bear essential for Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. — The preseason hype has been impressive for a California team that hasn't been to the Rose Bowl since 1959.

• A preseason No. 9 ranking in the Associated Press poll, the Bears' highest since 1952 when Pappy Waldorf was the coach.

• A Heisman candidate, running back Marshawn Lynch.

• An Outland Trophy candidate, defensive tackle Brandon Mebane.

• A Jim Thorpe Award candidate, Daymeion Hughes.

Everything seems to be in place for all those "A Rose Bowl Before I Die" types to start looking at cemetery plots. Everything except a quarterback.
