California coach Jeff Tedford won't name his starting quarterback for Saturday's season opener at Tennessee until later in the week. Tedford is waiting to choose between Nate Longshore and senior Joe Ayoob until Longshore returns to practice tomorrow. The sophomore missed parts of last week's workouts with a back injury. The ninth-ranked Golden Bears, who have their highest preseason ranking in 54 years, open the season on the road against the Number 23 Volunteers. Longshore beat out Ayoob for the starting job in training camp last season, but broke his ankle in the first half of Cal's first game. Ayoob took over, but eventually lost his job to Steve Levy after throwing 11 interceptions in his final four starts. Levy would be in competition for the job this season, but is suspended for the season opener as punishment for his involvement in a bar fight in San Francisco during the summer.
