KNOXVILLE — Tennessee football players went to a cookout at the head coach’s house in Maryville on Thursday evening, but their focus was more on hosting California than on late-summer socializing. After officially closing fall camp at the end of Tuesday’s scrimmage, the Vols engaged in only a brief session on Wednesday. But in a two-hour session at Haslam Field prior to the cookout, coaches and players got preparations under way for the Sept. 2 matchup with the Golden Bears. “We got started on Cal for real on both sides, trying to get a little bit ahead in our scouting report,” UT coach Phillip Fulmer said.
