San Jose Mercury: Cal Bears deal with high expectations

CAL FACES NEW PRESSURES AS A NATIONAL CONTENDER

Not long ago, attendance and expectations were low at Memorial Stadium. But since a 1-10 campaign in 2001 sent Coach Tom Holmoe packing, the Cal football team under Jeff Tedford has quickly evolved from bowl contender to emerging Pacific-10 Conference power to one of the nation's elite programs -- according to preseason polls.  The Bears will take the field in Saturday's opener at Tennessee ranked No. 9 by the Associated Press, their highest preseason rank since 1952. Street & Smith's Magazine predicts them to unseat four-time defending Pac-10 champ USC, and the Bears are no lower than 12th by any of the major publications.
