BERKELEY, Calif. - California coach Jeff Tedford won't name his starting quarterback for Saturday's season opener at Tennessee until later in the week. Tedford is waiting to choose between Nate Longshore and senior Joe Ayoob until Longshore returns to practice Monday. The sophomore missed parts of last week's workouts with a back injury. "We probably will not (name a starter) until Tuesday or so," Tedford said Sunday. "Nate had a slight disc problem, just wrenched his back a little bit and fired up a nerve. He probably could have practiced Saturday. I would anticipate that he's full speed Monday, ready to go." The ninth-ranked Golden Bears, who have their highest preseason ranking in 54 years, open the season on the road against the No. 23 Volunteers.
