Oakland Tribune: Confident Cal freshman expects to cover well for Mixon

BERKELEY — On the inside of Syd'Quan Thompson's right forearm, where he has cradled a football while doing extraordinary things, is a tattoo.

It's the image of a football player, who's posing above these words: "Show Stopper."  "I try to live up to it," he said of the nickname, given to him by an uncle. "I will be a unique player."  Show Stopper describes Thompson perfectly. He was a touchdown machine and a one-man highlight film, at Grant High School in Sacramento.  "He's explosive," said Cal coach Jeff Tedford. "When he has the ball in his hands, he's so elusive."  With Tim Mixon's season-ending knee injury, Cal needs a starting cornerback. Tedford isn't one to overpraise freshmen, but he's obviously sold on Thompson.
