Contra Costa Times: Rule change gave Krieg a chance to play at Cal

By Jay Heater

BERKELEY - NCAA Proposal 2005-54 supposedly is about education, but new Cal offensive guard Tyler Krieg admitted that his transfer from Duke had as much to do with football as academics. "I came from a place where there was no respect, the bottom of the barrel," said Krieg, who started at right guard for Duke the past two seasons. "There is a lot of hype around Cal." Krieg's transfer and his immediate eligibility to play his final season for the Golden Bears was due to the new rule, passed in the spring, that allows players who graduate but still have eligibility remaining to transfer without penalty. Krieg redshirted his first season at Duke, then played the next three seasons. He graduated after four years last May.
