Oakland Tribune: Duke grad now a 'free agent' for Cal

NCAA offers new rule for grad students with remaining eligibility

BERKELEY — Tyler Krieg is college football's first free agent.  Well, not technically. Krieg simply took advantage of a new NCAA rule this year that states if you graduate with a year of eligibility left, you can use it at any university you choose.

And so Krieg left Duke, where he started as an offensive lineman the past two years, and showed up at Cal. He'll play his last year for the Golden Bears and work on a master's degree in education that focuses on athletes and academic achievement.  Duke didn't offer that form of graduate studies, and Krieg wants to play in a bowl game before his eligibility expires. Because Duke had a 9-37 record the past four years playing in the ACC against Miami, Florida State and Virginia Tech, he brought his bowl dreams to Berkeley.
