California quarterback Nate Longshore knows he faces a series of daunting challenges this week even before he and the Bears take on Oregon. That would be more questions about … Tennessee. "It's unbelievable," he said, a massive eye roll palpable through the telephone line. "We're so sick of talking about it. Every week we're doubted because of that one game. It's going to happen all year and we're expecting it. It just gets old." The merest mention of California to a national college football audience elicits smirks that recall the Bears humiliating face plant in a 35-18 defeat at Tennessee to open the season. The inglorious defeat fed the widely held perception that the Pac-10 is USC and nine tulips of varying shades.
It doesn't matter that Longshore, now seventh in the nation in passing efficiency, and the No. 16 Bears play host to No. 11 Oregon in a game with significant Pac-10 implications. It doesn't matter that the Bears since then have clubbed four consecutive opponents with an average margin of victory of nearly 27 points.
