Oakland Tribune: Cal versus Tennessee in the Rose Bowl?

Dave Del Grande

DATELINE: Pasadena. I'm not one for rematches in college football, but I'd love to see Cal and Tennessee meet again this season.  And now that the initial BCS rankings are out, I'm guessing the Volunteers would love to see it, too.  How is it possible Cal could be 10th and Tennessee 11th in the ratings when the Volunteers own a 17-point romp over the Bears this season? I'm pretty sure it's a question that'll remain unanswered on Knoxville talk shows today.  But here's how it's possible: Both teams now have one loss, and the list of teams Cal has beaten is more impressive than that of Tennessee.  Don't fear, Volunteers fans. That'll change if your heroes keep winning. And that's the great thing about the BCS rankings — teams can rise and fall at any time even if they don't lose.  While Cal's schedule softens, Tennessee has Alabama, LSU, Arkansas and possibly the SEC title game on the horizon. It'll eventually push the Volunteers ahead of the Bears for the right reasons, not simply because of a single result.

Cal-Tennessee in the Rose Bowl? Now that would be a lot of fun.
