I don't know if Jake Locker, four months removed from graduation at Ferndale High School, is ready or able to play quarterback for the University of Washington this season. Neither do you. Nor does the guy sitting in the Tyee section at Husky Stadium. Or the person who posts comments on Dawgman.com using the screen name DawgsCrushDucks. The only people who know are Locker, UW coach Tyrone Willingham and offensive coordinator Tim Lappano. They have access to Locker's daily progress at Husky practice. We don't. And they're not saying if Locker, now that senior Isaiah Stanback is finished for the season with a foot injury, will play at some point during 2006. But here's one consideration UW coaches should not factor into the decision: saving Locker's redshirt season. If Locker is the best available quarterback on the roster -- better than juniors Carl Bonnell and Johnny DuRocher -- he should play this season.
