• It's two weeks and counting until No. 9 Cal's Sept. 2 football season opener at No. 23 Tennessee. Cal's defense already looks good to go. But I'm guessing Tedford would love an extra week or three or four to whip his offense into shape before facing Tennessee on the road. Neither Nate Longshore nor Joe Ayoob looked particularly sharp throwing the football during Thursday's intrasquad game. Tedford still is trying to incorporate a spread scheme into his offense and rebuild his offensive line, which lost three starters to the NFL. "Definitely as an offense we need to improve," Longshore said. The clock is ticking.
• The quickest and simplest way for Cal to improve on offense is to hand the ball to running back Marshawn Lynch. Tedford wisely held his Heisman Trophy candidate out of Thursday's scrimmage and will hold him out of next week's scrimmage, too. Unless the Bears' passing game makes huge strides quickly, Lynch will get more than enough work at Tennessee. Refer to Cal's final two games last season, both victories. Lynch carried 24 times for 123 yards and one score against Stanford and 24 times for a career-high 194 yards and three touchdowns against BYU at the Las Vegas Bowl.
Quarterback Steve Levy threw a combined 41 passes in those games, completing 26.
