Rose Bowl, BCS championship game may be in team's future

EUGENE -- When Oregon defeated Oklahoma a few weeks ago, the college football world tuned in. But that attention had as much to do with the controversial ending and subsequent fallout as it did with the Ducks' performance. Saturday's 48-13 dismantling of Arizona State served notice that while Oregon caught a few breaks in the Oklahoma game, the victory was no fluke. The Ducks moved up three spots this week to No. 11 in the polls and bring plenty of momentum into Saturday's showdown at No. 16 California, a game with Rose Bowl implications. Before the season started, with home games against Stanford and Oklahoma, and road tests at Fresno State and ASU in the first four games, it would not have been unreasonable to think that the Ducks might start 2-2. But an unblemished record has Oregon fans thinking Rose Bowl, or perhaps even a spot in the BCS national championship game. Sound far fetched? Well, it's possible. If the Ducks defeat Cal, and knock off No. 3 USC in Los Angeles on Nov. 11, they could be 11-0 heading into the Civil War game at Oregon State. Sure, the road to the Pac-10 championship is littered with obstacles, including an Oct. 21 road date with Washington State. But as the college football season moves into October, Oregon finds itself among the elite teams in the nation.
