Excerpts:

BERKELEYCal coach Jeff Tedford must replace experience with potential for the Tennessee opener Sept. 2 after getting the worst possible news about cornerback Tim Mixon.  "He tore his ACL, so he'll be out for the year," Tedford said Friday, adding that surgery was imminent for the senior cornerback/punt returner.  Mixon suffered major damage to his right knee Thursday returning a punt in the team's first scrimmage of fall camp. Mixon wasn't hit, but in planting, the leg gave out.  So who replaces Mixon, a second-team Street & Smith preseason All-America?  "Syd Thompson," said Tedford, then quickly correcting himself. "No, no, no, no. (Randy) Bundy, Syd Thompson, Robert Peele, all those guys, will compete at that position."

POSITIONING: Tedford won't name his starters until next week, but a pattern is developing.

The offensive line: tackles Andrew Cameron and Scott Smith, guards Erik Robertson and Bryan Deemer, and center Alex Mack.

Wide receivers: DeSean Jackson and Robert Jordan; tight end Craig Stevens; quarterback Nate Longshore; tailback Marshawn Lynch; fullback Byron Storer.

Defensive line: Abu Ma'afala, Matthew Malele, Brandon Mebane, Nu'u Tafisi: linebackers Worrell Williams, Desmond Bishop, Justin Moye; cornerback Daymeion Hughes and safeties Thomas DeCoud and Brandon Hampton.

New additions to watch: tight end Cameron Morrah, defensive end Rulon Davis, punter Andrew Larson and offensive tackle Mike Tepper.
