California will have to pursue a Pac-10 football title without one of its key contributors. Senior cornerback Tim Mixon is out for the season after tearing an anterior cruciate ligament while returning a punt during Thursday's scrimmage, ESPN.com's Joe Schad reported. Mixon, one of the nation's top punt returners, left the field on crutches and with a brace on his right knee. Surgery will be needed after an MRI revealed the torn ACL.
"He did not get hit; he just planted and his knee gave out," Cal coach Jeff Tedford said. Mixon intercepted three passes and was an honorable mention All-Pac-10 defensive back last season for the Golden Bears, who are ranked No. 9 in The Associated Press preseason Top 25. This isn't the first season-ending injury Mixon has suffered at Cal. He started the first four games of his freshman season before an injury to his left knee ended his year. Redshirt freshman Syd'Quan Thompson or senior Randy Bundy likely will start in Mixon's place.
