Bartko's track record suggests Cal should find money for renovation

Note to potential Cal donors who might be dining with Cal senior associate athletic director Jim Bartko: As long as there is food on the table, there is no need to pull out your wallet. Afterward, though, look out. "I don't ever ask for money during dinner," Bartko said with a smile. Cal's new prime fund-raiser for its athletic program and stadium project is a master money man who plied his trade at the University of Oregon the past 17 years. Among his shining accomplishments was the $91 million expansion of Autzen Stadium.
That task pales in comparison to the elephant Bartko has decided to embrace. With $90 million in the bank for the construction of the Student-Athlete High-Performance Center to be built along the outer rim of Memorial Stadium's west side, along with another $10 million pledged, Bartko has to find $25 million more in the next few months so the construction project can begin on time in December.
