Tedford carefully choosing Cal's quarterback

BERKELEY, Calif. - California coach Jeff Tedford almost seems to welcome a quarterback controversy to liven up his summers. If several passers are good enough to be in competition for his team's most important starting job, the quarterback guru figures he must be doing something right. "If you don't have talent, sometimes that's when you don't have competition," Cal's coach said with a laugh. The ninth-ranked Golden Bears have a wealth of talent at nearly every position, leading to their highest preseason ranking since 1952. But Tedford still hasn't decided who will lead that talent into Neyland Stadium next Saturday for a pressure-packed opener against No. 23 Tennessee.
