Sports Memo: Cal a force to be reckoned with in the Pac-10

The USC Trojans are in a familiar spot at the midway point of the 2006 season. USC is leading the PAC-10 conference. Pete Carroll's team has won 25 straight conference games. In recent years, few squads have been able to compete in matchups against USC. However, the Trojans appear to be coming back to the pack a little in 2006. In consecutive weeks, USC was able to escape with six-point conference victories over Washington and Washington State. The departures of Leinart, Bush, and White have clearly been felt. Still, USC is on top and the Trojans will be a solid favorite in their remaining games. If things go as expected, the Trojans could very well face the winner of the Michigan-Ohio State game for the BCS title. However, a major roadblock could prevent the Trojans from reaching the title game for the third straight year. USC has company at the top of the PAC-10 standings. California has rebounded from an opening loss to Tennessee to win five straight games. The Bears offense resembles the vintage USC squads from recent years. Cal has eclipsed 40 points in each of the five wins. While USC has been challenged, Cal has won its' three conference games by margins of 28, 28, and 21 points. Is Cal poised to take down USC at the LA Coliseum on November 18th?
