Seattle Times: WSU Football Notebook | Hill misses practice

By Craig Smith

Washington State wide receiver Jason Hill said his injured right shoulder is feeling better and that he expects to play against No. 10 California on Saturday in Pullman. "I feel good, I think I'll be out there," said Hill, who suffered the injury catching a pass for the only touchdown in the Cougars' 13-6 win at Oregon State. "It's been getting better every day," added Hill, who was to see a doctor later Monday. Trainers had placed him on the "no practice" list rather than the "out indefinitely" category. Hill said the Beavers defender on the play, cornerback Keenan Lewis, "landed on me." Lewis was penalized for grabbing Hill's facemask on the play. Asked if the facemask penalty was the reason for his injury, Hill said it was "part of it."  Hill, who owns WSU records for touchdowns (30) and set the career yardage mark of 2,504 in Corvallis, is a San Francisco native who had a big day against Cal last year.  He caught six passes for 240 yards and three third-quarter touchdowns at Cal in a 42-38 loss.

Hill spent part of last week in the Bay Area where his mother underwent heart surgery. He said Monday that she is recovering rapidly and was able to attend a youth football game Sunday to watch Jason's brother play.

Boyd likely to miss California game

WSU is likely to be without starting tight end Cody Boyd, who is listed on the "out indefinitely" category on the Cougars injury report issued Monday. He has a high ankle sprain. The senior missed four games in 2004 and two games last year because of injuries. Boyd, a 6-foot-8-inch target, is WSU's third leading receiver with 15 catches for 238 yards and one touchdown this season. He also has earned praise for his blocking. Third-string tight end Ben Woodard is listed as out indefinitely with a knee sprain suffered against the Beavers.

Notes

• The WSU-Cal game won't be televised and kickoff is 2 p.m.

• Cougars senior linebacker Scott Davis has been named Pac-10 player of the week. Davis had three sacks, two of them on OSU's final possession, two fumble recoveries and two pass breakups. Davis is the third Cougar to earn player-of-the-week honors. Mkristo Bruce got the defensive award after his five-sack performance at Stanford and place-kicker Loren Langley was named after kicking the 17-yard field goal that beat Baylor.

• Hard to believe: Cal hasn't won in Pullman since 1979.

Cal is a 7 ½-point favorite.

• Marshawn Lynch, Cal's star running back, missed more than half of Cal's 45-24 romp over Oregon with an ankle injury but is expected to be able to play Saturday.
