Quick Look at Washington State

Washington State beat Oregon State in Corvalis this past weekend 13 to 6 (Cal beat OSU 41-13).  Their quarterback, Alex Brink, threw for 270 yards and 1 touchdown.  A local Washington paper, The Columbian, noted that the Cougars “overcame their own shortcomings to win a defensive struggle that appeared to set football back 20 years, creating a new standard for winning ugly.”  After the game, when coach Bill Doba was asked what his team needs to work on, he responded “Ha, ha, ha, you name it.”  The Cougar defense did well, and did not allow a touchdown and it was the fourth time this season that the Cougards held an opponent to one touchdown or less.  The defense forced four turnovers and had six sacks against the Beavers.  Cal will have to watch out for Scott Davis, who had three sacks, and Mkristo Bruce, who had two.  Jason Hill is WSU’s top receiver, as well as their all-time yardage leader with 2,404 yards.  He caught 5 passes on Saturday for 121 yards, but left the game with a sore shoulder (it does not sound serious).  Hill has 30 career touchdowns.

The Cougars are 4-2, having lost to Auburn 14-40 and USC 22-28.  They “bearly” beat Baylor, 17-15, and crushed the Stanford patsies 36-10.

The Cougars nearly beat USC before a sold out crowd at Martin Stadium in Pullman.  Against the Trojans QB Brink was 26-46 with 287 yards and two touchdowns on the day, but he failed to execute twice in the red zone.

While a sell out at Martin Stadium consists of only 35,700 fans, they are very loud and will no doubt be excited for this weekend’s game against a top-10 Cal team.  The game is at 5:00 p.m.
