Oregon State Daily Barometer: No. 20 Cal dominates Beavers 41-13

The Bears score 21 points in the first quarter and dominate the Beavers in every aspect Saturday

Oregon State fans had reason to celebrate when the first half of Saturday's contest against No. 20 Cal came to a close, but it wasn't the 28 point deficit that had them excited.  Alexis Serna tied an OSU record with a 58-yard field goal to end the half with Cal leading 31-3. OSU head coach Mike Riley said it wasn't a tough decision to send Serna out to attempt the kick. "The only discussion we had right there was if there was time for one more play to get a quick out and get a few more yards up the field, but there wasn't because there were only five seconds to go," Riley said. "So we said 'go get it.'"

And Serna got it, but that was OSU's only scoring drive of the first half. The Bears came out on top, 41-13. Cal scored four touchdowns in the first half. The Bears had five offensive possessions in the half and scored on all of them. OSU forced six third downs before halftime, but Cal converted on five of them, including two on the opening drive. "We had them in third and long numerous times, and you have to be doing something right to have third and long, but they made some great plays," said OSU safety Sabby Piscitelli. The touchdown that capped Cal's opening drive came on a third down play when junior receiver Lavelle Hawkins caught a 39-yard pass from quarterback Nate Longshore. OSU looked good on its opening possession as well, but an Yvenson Bernard fumble at the Cal 12 ended the drive. "They hit us with a long one when we blitzed them and got a touchdown," Riley said. "The drive right after that we drove the ball right down there and didn't do anything with it because we fumbled the ball." The fumble was forced by Cal's Desmond Bishop, but according to Bernard it wasn't because of an outstanding defensive play. "I just tried to switch the ball to my left hand and use my free arm [and fumbled]," Bernard said.
