Daily Cal: Bonnell Finally Gets to Live the Dream

BY Steven Dunst

There are few stories as steeped in irony as this one. Because of quarterback Isaiah Stanback, Carl Bonnell was forced to sign with Washington State over his dream school, Washington.  Then-Huskies coach Rick Neuheisel recruited Bonnell out of high school, but when the more-coveted Stanback signed with Washington, Neuheisel decided not to sign two quarterbacks in the same class.  Bonnell took the second-best offer, signing with the rival Cougars. But after one unfulfilling season on the bench, he transferred to his childhood favorite and accepted the possibility of limited playing time.

In a sudden twist of fate, Bonnell now has Stanback to thank for the chance to make his first start of the season for the Huskies on Saturday at Memorial Stadium against the No. 10 Cal football team.  The emotional and physical leader of Washington, Stanback injured his foot while scrambling in the fourth quarter of last week’s 27-17 loss to Oregon State. He will likely miss the rest of the season.
