Contra Costa Times: Longshore handles business like seasoned vet

BERKELEY - Forget about that brewing quarterback controversy at Cal. There's no need to launch benchnatelongshore.com. No need to start a grassroots movement to convince Cal coach Jeff Tedford to elevate Steve Levy from third- to first-string. No need to push for Joe Ayoob's return to the starting lineup. One week after being replaced by Ayoob in the third quarter against Tennessee, Longshore started again and made it clear he's the right man for the starting job. Longshore passed for 234 yards and four touchdowns, including a 48-yard strike to DeSean Jackson, with no interceptions. All in the first half of Cal's 42-17 victory Saturday over Minnesota. For the game, he completed 22 of 31 passes for 300 yards and four touchdowns with zero interceptions. After last week's 35-18 loss to Tennessee, Tedford waited three days before naming Longshore his starting quarterback. This time, Tedford waited about 10 minutes. "Nate's our starter," Tedford said, smiling broadly and acknowledging just how good it felt to be able to say that.
