SF Chronicle: Cal can't take it easy against promising Portland State

Coach Jeff Tedford sees nothing easy about what should be the easiest week on California's schedule. Tedford's wariness of Division I-AA Portland State is more than the usual coach kvetching, however. The Vikings (2-0) of the always-competitive Big Sky Conference beat New Mexico in their season opener, and their defense — which features four Division I transfers — hasn't allowed a touchdown this season. After looking sharp in a 42-17 victory over Minnesota last weekend, the 21st-ranked Golden Bears (1-1) expect a difficult tuneup for the Pac-10 schedule when Portland State visits for the schools' first meeting Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Despite his worries, that's how Tedford wants it.  "(Portland State) looks like any Division I team," Tedford said. "They've really assembled a good group there. They know what they're doing and are really comfortable up there. I would never venture to say they're a lowly I-AA team. They look like a I-A team."
