Longshore Leads Cal to Victory, Fueling the Bears to 531 Yards of Total Offense Saturday

Nate Longshore was just glad to see the fourth quarter of a game Saturday. The way he played, there may be many more fourth quarters to come.
The rest of the No. 22 Cal football team didn't have much to complain about either in a 42-17 victory over Minnesota at Memorial Stadium in the home opener. This was the Bears team many expected to see at the outset of the season: a dependable rushing attack, big plays through the air and mostly sound defensive play. Longshore put up sparkling numbers in the first full game of his college career.
The sophomore temporarily put to rest any ideas of a quarterback controversy between himself and senior Joe Ayoob by completing 22-of-31 passes for 300 yards and four touchdowns in his first home game since he broke his fibula in the 2005 season opener versus Sacramento State. Sophomore wide receiver DeSean Jackson hauled in a career-high three touchdown passes, junior wideout Lavelle Hawkins caught a career-high nine passes for 125 yards and the Cal rushing tandem of Marshawn Lynch and Justin Forsett combined for 216 yards on the ground. "We knew we could play a lot better than last week and we came out and did it," Bears coach Jeff Tedford said. "It was a great effort in all three phases of the game."’
