Contra Costa Times: Assistant coach, son reunited when Cal plays Portland State

Shortly after Memorial Stadium empties on a weeknight, Cal assistant coach Danny Ferrigno runs alone. A few wrinkles and some strands of gray are all that separate him from his last assistant coaching stint at Cal from 1996-99. Those and the fact that he now runs alone. It doesn't seem that long ago that Ferrigno, who coaches wide receivers, would finish practice and then fire passes to his son, Brendan. Now a senior wide receiver at Portland State, Brendan Ferrigno will do his best to make his dad pay for all those practice sessions, when the Division I-AA Vikings visit Cal on Saturday.

"It won't be the first time Brendan has caught a pass in this stadium," Ferrigno said with a smile. "I kept him with me all the time. He always was at football practice." Now a 5-foot-10, 180-pounder, Brendan cherishes those memories. "A couple of his old players have seen me play (at Portland State)," he said. "They say, `I remember you always tried to run wind sprints with us. You were the kid who always had a ball in his hands.""
