Sports Network: Bears try to stay Golden at home against Portland State

The 21st-ranked California Golden Bears continue their three-game homestand this Saturday, when they host the Portland State Vikings in non-conference action from Memorial Stadium. After opening the season with a disappointing 35-18 loss at Tennessee, the Bears showed why they deserved to be in the Top-25 by pounding Minnesota, 42-17, last weekend. With the win over the Golden Gophers, Cal improved to 5-0 in home openers under head coach Jeff Tedford. Saturday's game will be the final regular-season non-conference tilt for the Bears, who are 15-6 under Tedford in non- league bouts. As for the Division I-AA Vikings, they enter the contest without a blemish on their record, going 2-0 thus far. The team opened the 2006 campaign by beating I-A foe New Mexico, 17-6, before trouncing Northern Colorado, 45-3, in its Big Sky opener last week. With the fast start, PSU is now ranked 13th in The Sports Network's I-AA poll. This game marks the first-ever meeting between PSU and Cal on the gridiron.
