SF Chronicle: DeCoud hurts knee but not seriously

CAL NOTEBOOK

In just his first season as Cal's defensive backs coach, R. Todd Littlejohn already has a newfangled, two-part method down flat.  "You just hold your breath," he said, "and then you cross your fingers."  That's what Littlejohn did when safety Thomas DeCoud, the team's leading tackler, limped off the field in the first quarter of Saturday's 49-21 victory over Arizona State.  Head coach Jeff Tedford said DeCoud twisted his knee and will need further evaluation. The junior appeared to injure his right knee while chasing an overthrown ball on Arizona State's second possession, and the Bears are optimistic the injury won't be serious.  "You still never want to see anything like that happen," said Littlejohn, who watched senior cornerback Tim Mixon tear his anterior cruciate ligament during training camp.

Tedford and Littlejohn said Bernard Hicks played well in DeCoud's place.  "He's been preparing like a starter, and he came in and played like it," Littlejohn said  Getting even: DeSean Jackson wouldn't tell reporters exactly what he said when he was skipping backward off the field and jawing at the Arizona State sideline after he was illegally hit while trying to field a first-half punt.
