Smith out -- knee injury

Cal tackle to miss 3 weeks

Rusty Simmons

Starting right tackle Scott Smith strained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee and will miss about three weeks, Cal coach Jeff Tedford said Sunday.  "He doesn't need an operation," Tedford said. "He just has to heal."  Tedford wouldn't nail down which reserve tackle, Mike Tepper or Mike Gibson, is in line to start in Smith's place because he still doesn't know if left tackle Andrew Cameron (ankle) will be able to return this week.  "There are a lot of possibilities," he said. "As of today, Tepper and Gibson would be the starters, but Andrew is coming along, so we'll see how it goes."

Tepper, who worked at both left and right tackle during training camp, got his first career start in place of Cameron in the 42-16 win over Portland State on Saturday, and Gibson, who has worked mostly on the right side, replaced Smith when he went down in the second quarter.
