NO. 21 CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS: Cal made the most of its non-con game against Double-A Portland State, racing away with a 42-16 yawner in Berkeley. Marshawn Lynch picked up 112 yards and a touchdown on just six carries, while DeSean Jackson caught five passes good for 103 yards and a score. Cornerback Daymeion Hughes even got in on the scoring cashing in a 30-yard interception return for six points...Still, Jeff Tedford sees room for more improvement before No. 22-ranked ASU comes to town this weekend...not even Tennessee's Erik Ainge and the Vols' passing attack can rival the bombardment the Golden Bear secondary will face at the hands of the Sun Devils on Saturday.
NO. 22 ARIZONA STATE SUN DEVILS: ASU's first-ever meeting with the Colorado Buffaloes produced a sloppy 21-3 victory, but head coach Dirk Koetter was pleased. "When we can win 21-3 on the road at a Big 12 school and not play our best on offense...that says a lot about where we're at," Koetter said...Nevertheless, Colorado is a pitiful 0-3 and possibly the weakest team in the Big 12's Northern Division this year. So how prepared is ASU for a conference-opening day road game in Berkeley vs. No. 21 Cal? The Sun Devils have a win over Double-A Northern Arizona, one over the WAC's Nevada Wolfpack, and now this road win over a hapless Colorado team. Meanwhile, Cal has the experience of a road ambush at Tennessee, a solid win over a fairly good Minnesota team, and last weekend's pasting of a solid Double-A Portland State. This week's game with Cal will be one of the most intriguing Pac-10 matchups in the young season.
