Division I-AA Portland State Boasts Big-Game Experience Heading Into Bout With Cal

A blowout is the result many college football fans would probably expect when a Division I-A team faces a Division I-AA team early in the season.
Many scores from this year-Texas' 56-7 rout of North Texas and West Virginia's 52-3 thrashing of Eastern Washington-support this stereotype.
But Portland State, the opponent of No. 21 Cal at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, provides an example of a growing trend against the rule that all Division I-AA teams are pushovers. The Vikings posted a 17-6 win against New Mexico, a Division I-A team, in their opener Sept. 2 in Albuquerque, N.M. Other Division I-AA teams have had success as well, such as Montana State, which beat Colorado, 19-10, on Sept. 2. Portland State, ranked No. 13 in Division I-AA, will also face Oregon at Autzen Stadium later in the year. The Vikings' defense has not allowed a touchdown this season.
