SF Chronicle: Cal seeks to avoid falling into Gopher hole

Rusty Simmons

Minnesota sophomore strong safety Dominic Jones let us in on a private conversation earlier this week.  Coach Glen Mason had an interesting comparison of the Gophers' first opponent, Kent State, and its next opponent, Cal.  "Coach Mason said that the only similarity between the teams is the blue and gold colors," Jones said. "It is definitely going to be a different game."  The Bears hope so.

While Cal trailed Tennessee 35-0 in the third quarter of its season-opening loss, Minnesota cruised to a 44-0 win over Kent State in Week 1. The Bears and Gophers appear to heading in different directions after the first week of the season, but their paths will cross at 4 p.m. today at Memorial Stadium.  "They took a good punch from Tennessee, but I think they are going to come back fighting," Minnesota sophomore tailback Alex Daniels said. "This is the biggest game of the season, because it is the next game."  The Cal players are also taking the one-game-at-a-time approach after a disappointing start.  "The guys were understandably disappointed in, more than anything, the way we played," Cal coach Jeff Tedford said. "Our guys understand it's a long season, and it's now about getting one game at a time."
