Summary of Trip to Knoxville

Tennessee Volunteer Fan Celebrates After the Game..."Wish that I was on old Rockytop..."

Note from Editor: I’ve now recovered from my trip to Knoxville and despite having had time to reflect on the game, the only positive thing I can think of is that they were consistent…consistently bad. Longshore looked like he hadn’t thrown a ball since high school. When he tried to run he looked like a lumbering monster hobbling down the field…fire…bad. The Cal secondary got burned constantly. When Ayoob finally was put in the game, the ESPN commentators, who desperately were waiting for the game to end, made comments such as “he’s not very accurate.” That’s an understatement. If there is a bright spot, perhaps Marshawn will stay until his senior year, when the quarterback situation will be worked out. I think it’s safe to turn off the server hosting his Heisman website.

That being said, Tedford is a great coach and I’m sure he’ll work out many of the problems. If he does choose Ayoob at the QB, I hope he doesn’t make the mistake of stubbornly sticking with him until it’s too late, like he did last year. Give Levy another shot.

Miscellaneous

Tennessee alumni and students were unbelievably polite and hospitable. However, the other 80,000 fans consisted of drunken hillbillies, crackers and rednecks, and they were very abusive after the game. I’m guessing these guys can’t afford the Greyhound fair to Berkeley next year, so I hope everyone is nice to the Tennessee alumni that do show up. It’s not their fault that they are from Tennessee.

I spotted Former USC coach John Robinson at the airport on Sunday, leaving Knoxville. No idea why he was there.

The older Cal alumni that I spoke with after the game were very angry. One fan, from Washington DC, said he’s been a Cal fan for 45 years and that he’ll never go to another Cal game again. Most of the other comments were not as extreme, but people were frustrated. Isn’t that what being a Cal fan is all about?

Dave Newhouse of the Oakland Tribune doubts that Tennessee was able to pick up Cal’s defensive signals, as claimed by the Vol’s receivers coach.

I did like the "Paddle faster, I hear banjo music" t-shirts some people were wearing.
The UT fans were very gracious and bought me several rounds to ease the pain after the game, and the coeds are gorgeous.
Yes, Memorial Coliseum is quieter and more friendly, but it may be a case of tough love if Cal isn't up by halftime. Then the chants will start, "Le-vy Le-vy Le-vy".
If Dave Newhouse thinks USC is even half as tough, or loud as Neyland, then he needs to go visit.

Sorry you had a problem with some of the Tennessee fans. With a 100,000 fans, some are going to be drunk, obnoxious and a pain in the ass. I’ll dispute your observation of 80,000 being “rednecks”, but depending upon who’s sitting or walking near you I don’t doubt that it might have seemed that way.

A couple of observations on the game. Cal took on a group of players and fans that were all doing their best to ensure this year wasn’t going to be a repeat of last year. Both were performing well beyond normal. The team didn’t look anything like last year. The crowd was yelling on first downs like we usually yell only on third or when we’re playing Florida or Georgia. Everyone was giving it everything they had. This game was HUGE for us and everyone knew it. A lot of frustration and was taking out on Cal. Your team is not as bad as they looked. I guarantee they won’t face another crowd like last Saturday even if they played here again. Although your coaches screwed up by not knowing that our crowd allows no opposing team to make an audible on 3rd down, until the game is out of reach.

And about your pic. Deliverance was filmed in North Georgia not Tennessee, but still the southern Appalachians. It’s an interesting stereotype of the Scotch-Irish that can be traced all the way back to the Roman occupation of England and the building of Hadrian’s Wall in 85 A.D. Before you make too much fun of it, you California “white boys” might want to check your family history. The historical migration patterns of the U.S. are such that many if not most of you will discover that your some of ancestors lived in the hills of the Appalachians prior to heading west.

I think you can expect great things from your team and coaches during the rest of the year. I don’t care what UW says, I think you’ve got a great group of fans.
Good Luck!

Yes, there is no doubt that as a life-long Cal fan, frustration is what it is all about.

But those rare moments of glory are all the better because of it. Just imagine for a moment just how awesome it will feel when we finally do make it back to the Rose Bowl.

I'm keeping the faith.

And, oh yeah, I vote for starting Longshore.
