Hacked off
Cal was not only outperformed badly last week at Tennessee, it might have been outfoxed, too. The Nashville Tennessean this week quoted Vols receivers coach Trooper Taylor as saying that fellow assistants David Cutcliffe and Rick Clausen "did a great job" picking up Cal signals from the sideline to its defense. Taylor said the two were "screaming through the headphones" that receiver Robert Meachem was getting man-to-man coverage from the Bears' Syd'Quan Thompson. Twice, Meacham caught hitch passes and juked Thompson for long touchdowns. Asked about it, Cal coach Jeff Tedford said, "I don't know if some of that's overblown. ... We had three different people giving signals, and unless they had the right guy every time. We may look at that. We did talk about it." Tedford conceded that a more experienced cornerback might have played Meacham better. That corner would be Tim Mixon, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in Cal's camp. "We just need to make sure everybody understands it's only one game," said Tedford, whose team hosts Minnesota Saturday.
