Tooele Transcript: First Bowl for BYU in 4 Years

For all you Blue bloods out there, the BYU Cougars (6-5) are finally going bowling after taking a four-year hiatus. Even though the Cougars dropped a thriller to the Utes to end the season, the Las Vegas Bowl still came calling and the Cougars will take on the California Bears (7-4) on Dec, 22 in the Las Vegas Bowl. Under the formidable coaching prowess of Bronco Mendenhall, BYU is back to its old ways, uniforms and all, and amassed a 460 yard average for the season and is ranked No. 13 offensively and No. 93 defensively. The defense is BYU's Achilles' heal, as they are young and fraught with injuries. This Bowl preparation break will help them heal and hopefully put a full defensive team on the field against Cal. The Bears are happy to be bowling as well and time will tell how their 30th-ranked offense (424 yards per game) can do against the injured Cougars and see if Cal's 47th-ranked defense can stop BYU's high-octane air attack lead by quarterback John Beck and Curtis Brown's cavalier running game. Cal lost to Texas Tech in the Holiday Bowl last year so the Bears will be prepared for BYU's Texas Tech style offensive scheme. This should be a good one. I don't know if you have ever attended a Collegiate Bowl game, but they are a lot of fun. Heck, the Las Vegas Bowl is just a few hours away, so hopefully we will see some of you dressed in BYU blue in Las Vegas. Go Cougars!

What BYU taketh they giveth away. It's probably the first time in recent memory when Ute Fans will actually ask heaven to bless BYU and their football team. BYU overlooked the Utes at their regular season finale and the boys in red stunned the Cougars with a 41 - 34 win behind their not-so-second-string quarterback Brett Ratliff. Ratliff played a great game and showed some real poise and athleticism to pull of the Utah upset, and just like that, the Utes are going bowling.
