The Tennessean: Vols Football: Early hopes will rest on the defense

KNOXVILLE - The Big Orange Nation is wringing its collective hands over the uncertainty of its offense. Vols quarterback Erik Ainge has spiked up and down in scrimmages as the offense has been nothing if inconsistent.   It is the strength of the team - its defense under coordinator John Chavis - that will be under the gun in the all-important first three games. Cal, Air Force and Florida are all home games, a big plus.  Under coach Jeff Tedford, Cal is one of college football's most potent offensive teams. Tedford is an innovative offensive mind in his own right, but when he had to replace an offensive coordinator after last season, Tedford traveled outside the box.
