Oakland Tribune: Bears have it tough in 2006-07

Column by Dave Del Grande

THE ONLY THING more embarrassing than Cal's football schedule last season was Ben Braun's pretty little arrangement of cupcakes.

Suffice it to say, things have changed big-time in 2006-07.  There's nothing more captivating in sports than a Week 1 matchup with a heavyweight — and Jeff Tedford has one in nine days at Tennessee.  Look ahead if you must to the Bears' trip to USC on Nov. 18, the Big Game two weeks later or even an intriguing home opener against Minnesota on Sept. 9, but it's the trek to Knoxville that will make or break Cal's season.  A win not only gets the BCS computers attaching a Top 10 label to the Bears' data base, it also introduces three prime-time players to a prime-time audience: Heisman candidate Marshawn Lynch, future NFL first-round pick DeSean Jackson and innovative offensive coordinator Mike Dunbar.
