Contra Costa Times: Deemer holds slight edge to be Cal's starting guard

A season ago, Cal's Bryan Deemer looked like another common story, that of the junior college offensive lineman who transferred to a Division I-A program and faded into oblivion. With just over a week remaining before the Bears open their season at Tennessee on Sept. 2, Deemer has fought his way out of oblivion. He has been starting at right guard for most of summer camp and apparently has a narrow edge over sophomore Noris Malele. "I don't know if I will start," Deemer said. "It's the coach's obligation to put our best five offensive linemen on the field." Cal offensive line coach Jim Michalczik said Deemer and Malele continue to run neck-and-neck and he added that he might be able to make a decision on the starter after examining film from today's scrimmage at Memorial Stadium.
