Contra Costa Times: Can Cal live up to hype?

Preseason rankings can cloud BCS

There was a time not long ago when attendance at Memorial Stadium was low and the expectations surrounding the Cal football team were even lower. Just four seasons removed from a dreary 1-10 campaign in 2001 that sent Tom Holmoe packing, the Golden Bears under Jeff Tedford have quickly evolved from respectable bowl contender to emerging Pac-10 power to one of the nation's elite programs -- judging by what the preseason polls have to say. This season's Cal team will take the field in Saturday's opener at Tennessee with more hype surrounding it than any in recent memory. The Bears are ranked as high as No. 6 by Street & Smith's Magazine -- which also predicts them to unseat four-time defending Pac-10 champ USC -- and no lower than 12th by any of the major publications.

I was half paying attention but I think Lee Corso, on College Game day this last sat., picked Cal to play in the BSC Championship game this year!
