Contra Costa Times: Cal's inexperienced secondary bracing for Tennessee

The Bears know the Vols will test their DBs early with three first-time starters in season opener

BERKELEY - Cal defensive coordinator Bob Gregory understands the significance of having three first-time starters in his backfield against host Tennessee on Sept. 2. "I would go after those cats," Gregory said. Indeed, the Volunteers are more likely to test Cal's secondary than trying to pound into a Cal defensive line that was named the top unit in the country by Athlon magazine. "We're going to have to run a few plays that will give those guys confidence," Gregory said.
