Sporting News: Conference Call - The Spoiler Edition

Tom Dienhart

PAC-10

Looking good: Cal. While the nation babbles on about other one-loss teams, the Golden Bears continue to win. Hey, I notice. In fact, I could be convinced that Cal is the nation's best one-loss team. After taking care of Arizona this Saturday, the Bears will get the national stage with a game at USC.

Looking lame: Washington. It seems like only yesterday when the galaxy was fawning over Ty Willingham's rehab project in Seattle. Well, look at the Huskies now: Losers of five in a row. U-Dub needs to win its last two games (Stanford, at Washington State) to get bowl eligible. It's gonna be close.

Game of the week: Oregon at USC. It's time for the Trojans to stand and be counted in the first of three rugged games at home. USC's offense should enjoy working against the Ducks' defense. But if the Troy defense can't generate big plays, Oregon will make this a fun shootout.

USC has looked weak most of this season. The Beavers finally pushed them just a bit harder than the 3 previous teams. While an Oregon victory would pretty much eliminate a chance of a Pac-10 team being in the National Championship game, it will set the Bears up nicely to finally make it to the Rose Bowl in my life time. Go Bears!
