Orange County Register: Booty Blossoms

He has developed into the team leader after coming into his own in the Oregon State loss.

LOS ANGELES – One of USC's brightest moments came in its darkest hour. Things had spiraled rapidly out of control among the orange foliage and the orange-and-black-dressed fans in Corvallis, Ore. The Trojans looked sloppy, and they were lucky only to be trailing Oregon State, 33-10, as the final seconds of the third quarter ticked down. John David Booty rolled out to the right and threw the ball to tight end Fred Davis in the end zone. It was the beginning of a furious USC comeback. The Trojans would score the game's final 21 points, but defensive end Jeff Van Orsow swatted Booty's final pass near the line of scrimmage. The Trojans' hopes ended with a failed two-point conversion. Out of the ashes of their only loss, the Trojans found their leader. Coach Pete Carroll talked to Booty in the locker room after that loss. The junior quarterback thought the only thing that stopped him was the clock.
