Daily Cal: So We Meet Again
USC’s Steve Smith and Cal’s Daymeion Hughes Renew Their High School Rivalry
BY Steven Dunst
Cal cornerback Daymeion Hughes and USC wideout Steve Smith have very different recollections of their high school matchups in Los Angeles. Smith remembers having career games against Hughes' Crenshaw High team while at Taft, saying he had over 100 yards every time and his squad won two out of three. “I remember running on Daymeion at Crenshaw—a streak—and catching a touchdown. I remember the newspaper after saying it was a breakout game for me. I still have it on my wall. It’s in the archives.” Hughes remembers things differently. “I don't remember him scoring in any of the games,” Hughes said of Smith. “It wasn't a career-day type thing. He might have played some good games, but they had a legitimate championship team.” For the record, Smith’s Taft team did win two-out-of-three against Hughes, and Smith hauled in a receiving touchdown to go along with 125 yards in Taft's 38-26 victory to start his senior season. In Crenshaw's 21-14 win over Taft in 2001, Smith threw a touchdown and caught another.
