Cal is a fresh start after bitter 2005

KNOXVILLE — It's reckoning time for Phillip Fulmer and his Tennessee football program today. The fallout from last season's 5-6 nightmare lingering, never has Fulmer been so glad to see the season opener get here. At the same time, never has he faced a more daunting challenge in an opener than today's clash with ninth-ranked and favored California.
It's been more than 20 years since the Vols opened the season at Neyland Stadium and weren't favored. The last time that happened was in 1985, when the 10th-ranked UCLA Bruins were in town.
