San Jose Mercury: Don't expect Cal to melt before the shouting creamsicles

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Some people live for the big rivalries in college football. I call these people Novemberists. You probably know a few Novemberists. You might even be one yourself.
For Novemberists, nothing beats a late-autumn Saturday when their school is playing against their best friend's school and a goofy trophy is on the line -- usually with a goofy bet that requires the loser to paint himself plaid. Novemberists are the fans who adore the traditional matchups, when there is a chill in the air, warmed by a few toots of whatever from a flask.
Not me. I am a Septemberist. I enjoy college football in just about any month. But for pure fun, give me the first few weeks of the season. Give me these early non-conference matchups, when the game plans aren't conservative and the teams are loose. Give me two good teams from dissimilar conferences, playing inside a mammoth stadium in the late-summer sun.
Give me Cal vs. Tennessee here today.
