Sifting through the rubble of blue and gold following Cal's 35-18 thrashing by Tennessee on Saturday, it was worth the extra shovel work to dig up one intriguing play by the Golden Bears at the very bottom of the pile.  It was their very first play from scrimmage, when quarterback Nate Longshore made a quick drop, threw a high fade pass and hit receiver Robert Jordan right in step for a 31-yard completion down the right sideline. It was a beautiful hookup, precise and seemingly auspicious.  At that point, Old Blues must have been reveling with the thought: "Yeah, baby, here we go in our new spread offense."  But it never got any better than that — in the spread formations or basic sets — unless you count Cal's fourth-quarter frenzy when the game already had been firmly stamped as a Volunteers rout. The spread was dead when it mattered, and Tennessee wasn't even fazed by its alleged strike-from-anywhere dimensions.
