Daily Cal: Wake-Up Call A Blessing in Disguise for Cal

With 106,009 orange-clad fans screaming, singing and standing in Knoxville, Tenn., on Saturday before kickoff, it was almost surreal when Heisman-hopeful Marshawn Lynch and the No. 9 Cal football team came marching out for the opening kickoff.  It quickly became all too real.  After that opening kickoff return, starting tight end Craig Stevens-called the Bears' "toughest player" by coach Jeff Tedford-laid motionless on the ground, knocked out with a concussion that sidelined him for the rest of the game.   With Stevens woozy on the sideline, Cal too quickly became the walking wounded, dazed in a sort of hellish nightmare that didn't end until Tennessee's second unit took the field midway through the third quarter. In just over a half of football, the Volunteers all-but-ended the marquee nonconference game, all-but-ended the historic Marshawn Lynch-for-Heisman campaign and all-but-ended the Bears' national championship aspirations.
