More Why is "Rocky Top" a better fight song than "Fight for California"? Why is Neyland Stadium a better venue than Memorial Stadium? Why is Smokey a better mascot than Oski? It's something called the SEC, the conference that expects-and receives-all the hype, deservingly or not. Some things in life just aren't fair. The biases didn't change when Oregon swept Mississippi State from 2002-03, it didn't change when USC walloped Auburn, 23-0, in 2003 and it won't change unless there's some serious global cooling and people in the South have more to do than sit around and watch college football games on muggy Saturday afternoons.
But that's just fine and dandy for the No. 9 Cal football team. On college football's opening weekend, the Bears get a prime time national television audience when they go against a team that is conveniently coming off a disappointing 5-6 season.
